The Palet game
What is the Palet Game?
The Palet game is a classic French outdoor skill game, beloved in Vendée, Brittany, and across France, often played with friends or family in gardens, parks, or village festivals. The aim: throw your palet (a small flat disc, often in cast iron, brass, or wood) as close as possible to a smaller target disc known as the “maître” or “jack,” much like pétanque.
How is it played?
- The “maître” is placed (or tossed) on a flat surface: classically, a wooden board (often 45–70 cm square) or directly on grass or a path.
- Standing a few meters away (2.8–3.8 m, depending on variant), players or teams take turns tossing their pallets, trying to get closest to the maître, or to knock opponents' pallets further away.
- Points are scored for every palet you have closer to the maître than your opponent's nearest palet.
- The first team or player to reach a pre-set score (often 11 or 13) wins!
